Everywhere around the world where L'Arche communities exist there is one thing that is striking: the men and women who have intellectual disabilities, whatever their nationality, language or culture, share so much in common. They teach us that we are one human family.

					Whether it be in Canada, in the Middle East, in India, in Central America, or elsewhere where communities of L’Arche have sprung up, we know that people who are excluded or marginalized have much to offer the rest of us. The experience of L’Arche demonstrates clearly that the most vulnerable members of our society are, in fact, artisans of peace who profoundly transform the people who come to share their lives with them.

	L’Arche was born at a time when young people, seeking to end the institutionalization of people with intellectual disabilities, realized that in living with such people their own understanding of life and of the world was profoundly transformed. This new kind of community life in which those who formerly would have lived in institutions now participated soon attracted many young people from around the world. Thus, L’Arche spread quickly to different countries and today, exists on all continents.


					Our communities welcome people of diverse backgrounds and cultural and religious traditions—Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and others including people who follow no religion. Each community reflects the local culture, language and traditions where it is located. L’Arche is a microcosm of what is possible when a society recognizes the importance of each one of its members, regardless of their differences and abilities.
